Preserving music concerts before they fade away

Material Description

The source materials consist of approximately 100 hours of Rice University Shepherd School of Music concerts recorded on ¼” open-reel tape between 1978 and 1989. During the early years of its existence, the Shepherd School did not have a designated building on the Rice campus; therefore, concerts were held in various locations on campus and around Houston, and were recorded by multiple sound engineers. The provenance for this collection is straightforward: The concert tapes remained in the custody of the administration of the Shepherd School after recording; they are currently arranged chronologically and stored at the Shepherd School. They are not accessible for public use and do not appear in any databases or finding aids in print or online; physical programs, however, are available in Rice’s Fondren Library and are currently being scanned in-house and placed in the Rice Digital Scholarship Archive,
