Materials nominated for digitization by the seven project partners will illuminate the undergraduate college careers and post-college experiences of women from the mid-nineteenth century (beginning with the opening of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, now College) through the mid-twentieth century, when the seven institutions became known, collectively, as the â€œSeven Sisters.â€ We have selected correspondence, diaries, and scrapbooks (containing news clippings, memorabilia, photographs, and ephemera) describing student life and campus climate, as well as local and world events. Important collections include the diaries and letters of some of Mount Holyokeâ€™s earliest graduates including Lucy Fletcher Hawley, Mary Quincy Brown, and Caroline LeConte Morris, whose writings illustrate the impact of early womenâ€™s education leader Mary Lyon, founder of Mount Holyoke; the letters of Cornelia (James) Cannon (Radcliffe College Class of 1899), best-selling author and civic leader; the Hart-Lester Harris (Smith College Class of 1913) papers, which reflect a family tradition of attending Smith College; and the letters and diaries of Jean Scobie Davis (Bryn Mawr College Class of 1914), who later taught at womenâ€™s colleges including Agnes Scott and Wells before turning to prison reform. In sum, these materials illuminate a growing narrative of women expanding their roles beyond the domestic sphere by claiming their rightful place as educated members of their society. A number of letters reflect conversations between some of the earliest womenâ€™s college graduates and their parents, illustrating the impact of higher education and living away from home. Topics included in these writings and scrapbooks range broadly from exams to professors, college and community social events (including campus traditions), sports and dramatics, cross-college events, politics, religion, home life, and travel.
