Materials to be digitized are videotaped recordings of interviews with a variety of individuals who knew and worked with Oscar Adams, Jr. (1925-1997) over the course of his legal career in the state of Alabama. Interviewees include relatives as well as legal community colleagues. The interviewees were conducted between 2006 and 2008 by staff of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI), which holds full rights to the interviews to be digitized and shared with the public. Subjects addressed in the interviews -- in addition to the overall subject, Justice Adams (his personal character, accomplishments, challenges, and contributions to civic life and the movement for civil and human rights in Alabama) -- include: Adams' childhood, youth, and family life; his father Oscar Adams, Sr. minister and publisher of the BIRMINGHAM REPORTER newspaper in the early 1900s; Adams' education and the schools he attended -- Parker High School, Talladega College, and Howard University School of Law; U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black; brother Frank Adams, Sr.; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC); Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR); Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth; the law firm of Adams, Baker & Clemon and the law partners James C. Baker and U.W. Clemon (Alabama's first African American federal judge); cases and clients including those from US Steel, Pullman Standard Manufacturing, US Pipe and Foundry, and American Cast Iron Pipe Company; the NAACP Legal Defense Fund with whom he often partnered on cases; Adams' appointment to the Alabama Supreme Court by Governor Fob James (1980); Adams' election to the position of Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama (1982); Adams' time on the state supreme court (1980-1993); relationships with fellow justices, lawyers and judges; practice with firm of White, Arnold & Dowd.
