The pioneering photographic archives from the expeditions of Dr. Roy Waldo Miner, Curator at the American Museum of Natural History from 1905-1943

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science holds the photographic research collection of Dr. Roy Waldo Miner (1875-1955). For almost 40 years Dr. Miner was a Curator of Invertebrates at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York. Beginning in 1905 as an Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Zoology he ended his career as Chairman of the Department and Curator, and retired in 1943 as Curator Emeritus. During his career, he made numerous research expeditions that included the collection of specimens for the museum. The photographic collection was donated to the Museum in 1973 by Dr. Miner's widow, Eunice Miner, a resident of Miami. The photographic archive consists of hand-colored glass lantern slides, black-and-white glass plate negatives, and plastic negatives, dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. The collection covers a variety of themes, including folklore and ethnography of islands in the Caribbean; scientific expeditions to the Bahamas, the South Pacific, and Puerto Rico among others; and, significantly, underwater photography. Dr. Miner began underwater photography in 1924, with the assistance of Captain Charles Williamson (who engineered the Williamson Submarine Tube, a large hollow tube which allowed scientists to descend several meters underwater from a moored vessel). The underwater photography in the collection is some of the earliest of its kind, predating William Beebe and his Bathysphere (1932). Many of the watercolors in the collection were created while in the tube. Significantly, a portion of the collection documents the creation of the Andros Coral diorama at the AMNH. Dr. Miner was tasked with the creation of a two-story diorama of the coral reef off Andros Island in the Bahamas. Completed in 1935, the diorama became world-famous, and is still on display in the Irma and Paul Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life at the AMNH in New York City.
